Going, Going, But NOT Gone…

Rapid online digital document delivery for articles

Beginning March 16, older bound journals from the Medical Center Library will be moved to the Locust Street offsite shelving facility that has been developed by the University for all three campus libraries.

Articles from bound journals will be provided free-of-charge as PDF files via the Digital Document Delivery (D3) service.

The move of materials will take place in two phases:

1) The initial stage will be to transfer lowest use materials to the offsite facility during the School of Medicine spring break (March 16-20).

2) At a later date, higher-use journals will be relocated from the main library facility to lower level compact shelving in the LRC, where they will be readily accessible for scanning on request by library staff.

All Online Journal Collections

For the past decade, academic medical libraries have seen a sharp decline in the use of print journals with a corresponding rise in the use of e-journals.

We now provide an all-online journal collection that offers greater breadth and ease of access at an overall lower cost.

Refreshing the Physical Library

The relocation of older print materials will ultimately free up 10,000 square feet of floor space (one-third of the library) that will be refreshed to improve the comfort and functionality of the physical library.

Thank you for your support as we work together to develop excellent services, resources, and facilities. Your ideas and suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

Opening the Library that Never Closes

Health Care is a 24/7 Profession.

Just as patient care needs do not follow regular schedules, neither do the research, study, and clinical information needs of students, faculty, and residents served by the Medical Center Library.

By providing round-the-clock access to a newly renovated and expanded Medical Center Library, we can offer a well-appointed facility that meets the needs of today’s users.

The offsite relocation of archival bound journals in 2009 will open up one-third of our floor space for use in creating a more spacious, inviting, and functional work area for students and faculty.

In surveys and focus groups conducted earlier this year, 24-hour access emerged as the number one priority for users.

Other key elements of the renovated library will include:

  • Expanded quiet & comfortable study areas
  • Business Center with scanning, printing, and fax capabilities
  • Breakout study rooms for small group work
  • Upgraded study tables and carrels with task lighting and electrical service
  • And much more…

We are now actively engaged in developing support for the Medical Center Library renovation and refresh.
